Three gorgeous Calabash Drums hand-made in Africa
The library includes three unique Calabash Drums, each offering a distinct sound and personality. Every Calabash instrument has been sampled with various accessories such as sticks, rings, and shakers. These instruments share a consistent keyboard mapping and come with a wide range of articulations, magic keys, and 12 tempo-synced grooves featuring mod wheel variations.
SMALL CALABASH
A smaller pyrographed instrument, with a dry and tight bass and a very powerful finger tap sound. Hand-made in Burkina Faso. Diameter: 37cm
GITA CALABASH
The gita features cowrie shell pairs attached around the open rim. It can be played like a drum, or it can be girated in two hands causing the shells to hit against the gourd in rhythm. A wonderful and very expressive instrument! Hand-made in Mali. Diameter: 41cm
LARGE CALABASH
A very large instrument with a deep and earthy bass sound. The impressive size of this instrument allows a wide range of finger hits variations. Hand-made in Niger. Diameter: 54cm
EXTRA ACCESSORIES
An ensemble of shakers, sticks, and rings were used to create a full range of traditional and modern sounds from all Calabash Drums.
Two microphone perspectives
The built-in mixer lets you control the volume and tonality of two very different microphone perspectives: you will find it quick and intuitive to perfectly integrate the instruments into your mixes!
MONO:
A combination of a Sennheiser BF541 and a Schoeps MK21 very close to the Calabash Drums. A powerful, detailed, and cutting sound. Use the low-cut control to finely tune and tighten the bass response.
STEREO:
A classy pair of Schoeps MK2H omni microphones in an AB set-up, higher above the Calabash Drums. A wide, beautiful, and realistic sound. Use the width control to go from mono to extra wide!
Intuitive keyboard mapping
Each Calabash Drum offers the same keyboard mapping, with 3 regular articulations, 3 shaker articulations, and 4 unique ‘magic’ keys:
White Keys: Hand and Finger techniques
These keys are the main playing area. They offer useful variations of all traditional hand and finger playing techniques:
B0: Alternative bass hit (played with the wrist)
C0: Main bass hit (played with a closed fist)
D1, E1, F1: three different finger hits
G1: double finger hits (on each side of the Calabash)
A1 and B1: two alternative full hits (played with the full hand on the calabash)
Black Keys: Bonus Articulations
C#1 and D#1: ring hit and double ring hits
F#1 and G#1: two alternative stick hits
A#1: sweeping finger strokes
Red keys: Shaker TECHNIQUES
C2: Bass hit with a shaker in hand
C#2 and D2: two alternative shaker swings
CYAN KEYS: ‘MAGIC KEYS’
These four cyan keys are ‘magic’ keys. A different sample is played each time the key is pressed. Up to 200 round-robin samples are programmed on these keys for maximum .
F2: ‘Magic ‘ accented hits
F#2: ‘Magic’ stick hits
G2: ‘Magic’ varying hits
G#2: ‘Magic’ soft hits
Prepared Calabash:
A unique ENSEMBLE of organic percussive sounds!
The ‘Prepared Calabash’ follows the same keyboard mapping as the three natural Calabash instruments, with a unique ensemble of samples recorded on the three calabash drums.
To create a wide range of colourful, textured sounds, many extra accessories were used (brushes, sticks, shells, other shakers, …)
This instrument also offers a great selection of highly original playing techniques (upside-down calabash hits, girated Gita shell hits, knuckle hits, scraping sounds, muted hits…).
With an extensive range of velocity layers and round-robins, these remarkable sounds are vibrant and incredibly organic, enhancing any percussion track with character and elegance!
BUILT-IN GROOVES
The three natural Calabash instruments and the Prepared Calabash feature 12 tempo-synced built-in grooves to create highly realistic and lively percussion parts. Each instrument comes in a 4/4 metric and an alternative 6/8 metric.
Use your modulation wheel to perform live groove variations and fill-ins on the spot.
Creating ultra-realistic percussion tracks is easy and fun!!
CALABASH TEXTURES
A superb cinematic instrument with a huge set of 67 soundscapes organised in 3 categories:
Acoustic textures
Granular textures
Designed textures
All the samples are based on extra-long looped recordings performed on the three Calabash Drums using a pair of Schoeps MK2H.
Several alternative presets offer a nice range of deep cinematic sounds and amazing organic textures.
AUTOMATIC SOUNDSCAPE GENERATORS
A collection of stunning and magical instruments:
Play any key from C1 to B1 to trigger one of 67 soundscapes. The choice of sound, its pitch, velocity, attack, release, and panning are fully randomized. Play several keys at once to instantly create unexpected sounds and rich organic soundscapes!
Several alternative presets and multi-instruments (Kontakt nkm) are included.
Get ready to be surprised and inspired each time you play one of these instruments!
MELODIC INSTRUMENTS
The library includes 10 nki melodic instruments, and 9 melodic nkm multi instruments.
All these instruments offer a chromatic playing range of 5 octaves. They are based on acoustic samples recorded on the three calabashes.
The sounds include basses, tuned percussions, keys, plucks, pads, and effects.
The multi-instruments provide inspiring rhythmic sequences as well as mesmerizing melodic textures and effects.
Use the melodic instruments along with the natural Calabash instruments to instantly create full tracks!!
EFFECTS
The GUI offers a selection of powerful controls ready to completely change the sound of the instruments!
All melodic and texture instruments offer handy ADSR controls (Attack and Release).
The master effect chain is organised to help you create a wide range of classic and innovative sounds, with a four-band equalizer, a powerful overdrive, and a parallel compressor. 30 custom Impulse Responses are included, with reverb send controls for each channel.
